Imsil-gun, water quality management... Total organic carbon (TOC) change

From January 1 of next year, it is possible to accurately measure the pollution level of public sewage treatment.

Reporter Yoon-cheol Koo

In order to systematically manage the water quality of the sewage treatment facility in Jeollabuk-do, Imsil-gun, the index for measuring the pollution level is changed to TOC, which represents the amount of all organic compounds that can be oxidized in the water as the amount of carbon.

The total amount of organic carbon (TOC), which will be applied from January 2021, is a preemptive measure following the revision of the'Water Environment Conservation Act' on October 16, 2018.

In particular, the standards for the discharge of water pollutants in wastewater discharge facilities and the effluent water quality standards for public sewage treatment facilities are converted from the existing chemical oxygen demand (COD) to total organic carbon (TOC).

The chemical oxygen demand (COD) has a limit that cannot measure all organic substances such as non-degradable substances, and the living environment standards of rivers have introduced total organic carbon since 2013, and wastewater discharge facilities have introduced this.

Accordingly, from January 1 of next year, the installation of a total organic carbon (TOC) water quality measurement device was completed in the sewage public sewage treatment facility in order to apply the total organic carbon amount standard to the discharge allowance standard and the effluent water quality standard of public sewage treatment facilities.

In addition, it is a policy to respond to the stable operation of measuring devices so that they can operate within water quality standards by enhancing the competency of related employees through education.

On the other hand, TOC is one of the measurement indicators for organic matter, which refers to the total amount of organic matter, and is a pollution indicator that measures the carbon dioxide generated by burning a sample at high temperature and expresses it as the amount of carbon.
