 ContributionInfluenza vaccination is essential!

Professor Kim Hak-ryeol, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Wonkwang University Hospital

Influenza, commonly called the 'flu', is an acute respiratory disease caused by influenza virus.

Influenza that occurs all over the world, including Korea, is characterized by an outbreak every winter in regions with seasonal divisions. It is accompanied by general physical symptoms such as weakness.

In addition, it is highly contagious, and when the elderly, children, and people with underlying diseases become ill, the mortality rate increases and complications may occur.

In particular, with the flu season approaching amid the COVID-19 pandemic, flu vaccination has become more important than anything else.

Influenza Influenza viruses are largely divided into types A, B, and C due to differences in protein structure.

Among them, type A is the one that causes frequent mutations and causes disease in humans. In humans, types A/H3N2, A/H1N1, and B are prevalent.

Every year, the WHO is the center of the global influenza surveillance system.

In general, the WHO proposes vaccine strains that will be prevalent in the year in February every year, which selects two types of type A virus and one type B virus that were most prevalent in the southern hemisphere last year and presents them to countries in the northern hemisphere.

The vaccine is a trivalent vaccine, and the addition of one type B to it is a quadrivalent vaccine.

Antibodies against the virus after vaccination reach their maximum 2 to 4 weeks after inoculation and have a protective effect for about 6 months.

Influenza vaccination is effective in preventing about 70-90% of healthy young people.

It is very effective in reducing hospitalization and death due to influenza in elderly or chronically ill patients, especially this fall and winter, as there is a high possibility of a 'twindemic' in which COVID-19 and flu are prevalent at the same time, it is recommended to get vaccinated within October .

Also, to prevent influenza, wash your hands frequently and avoid rubbing your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands.

In addition, it is important to make efforts in daily life, such as wearing a mask, drinking good water, and avoiding overwork.
