The Korea Institute of Science and Technology(KIST) Jeonbuk Composite Materials Technology Research Institute delivered 57 pieces of ultra-light foldable sword shield developed by itself to the Jeonju Wansan Police Station and Deokjin Police Station.

The 'ultra-light foldable sword shield' developed this time is 3mm thick using fiber-reinforced composite material, and it can withstand the impact of various blunt weapons, such as wooden and sledgehammers.

In particular, it weighs 1.2kg and is 40% lighter than the existing plastic shields, so it is easy to carry and can be opened and folded using a button.

In addition, prototypes were provided at the request of seven countries: Nigeria, Vietnam, Canada, Mongolia, Guatemala, UAE and Oman.

Kim Jin-sang, director of the Jeonbuk Composite Material Technology Research Center at KIST Jeonbuk Branch, said, "We are conducting various studies jointly with the National Police Agency for the realization of a safe public safety site. I will constantly think about it and work hard."

Jeonbuk National Police Agency Commissioner Lee Hyeong-se(Superintendent of Public Safety) said, "We expect that the police and government-funded research institutes will create greater synergy in the future. We will do our best for that," he promised.

Meanwhile, KIST Jeonbuk Composite Material Technology Research Center started research and development of sword and shield in 2018, paying attention to the voices of field police officers that practical and convenient defense equipment is needed to respond to various threats in the field of security.

Currently, we are developing a variety of security equipment using composite materials such as three-stage rods and taser guns.
