잼버리(Jamboree)는 북미 인디언의 '즐거운 놀이ㆍ유쾌한 잔치'라는 뜻을 지닌 시바아리(shivaree)란 말이 전음화 된 것이다.

 

스카우트 창시자인 베이든 포우엘 경이 1920년 영국 런던에서 열린 세계야영대회를 '제1회 세계잼버리'로 명명한데서 유래된 용어로 세계의 젊은 청소년들이 참여하는 지구촌 최대ㆍ최고의 청소년축제로 자리매김했다.

 

1920년 제1회 세계스카우트잼버리를 개최한 지 72년 만인 1991년 제17회 세계스카우트잼버리가 대한민국 고성에서 '세계는 하나(Many Lands, One World)' 라는 주제로 135개국 19,083명이 참가한 가운데 성공적으로 개최됐다.

세계스카우트잼버리의 교육적인 효과는 크게 5가지로 구분된다.

 

첫째, 인간관계를 개선시켜 준다. 

 

둘째, 경제적인 효율성을 제고시켜주는 역할을 해 준다. 

 

셋째, 사회발전에 주도적인 역할을 할 수 있도록 도와준다. 

 

넷째, 민주시민으로서 책임의식을 함양시켜 준다. 

 

다섯째, 청소년문제를 해결하기 위한 교정과 치료기능을 수행해 주고 있다.

 

세계스카우트잼버리는 인류의 내일을 짊어지고 나아갈 지구촌 청소년들이 ▲ 국가 ▲ 민족 ▲ 종교 ▲ 언어 등을 초월, 대자연속에서 공동으로 함께 어우러져 야영생활을 하면서 각종행사와 과정활동 등의 참가를 통해 서로간의 우의를 증진하고 심신발달을 도모해 국가발전과 세계평화에 기여하도록 하는데 있다.
