국제청소년연합(IYF) 김재홍 교육위원장이 인도 청소년 행사 중 최대의 행사로 4년마다 개최되는 제17회 전국 스카우트 잼버리와 지도자대회에 특별 Guest로 초대받아 마인드교육과 인성교육을 실시했다.

인도 방갈로에서 열린 이번 잼버리 개막식 행사에 인도 대통령‧카나타카(Karnataka) 주 Governor 총독‧총리와 장관들이 대거 참석한 가운데 김재홍 IYF 교육위원장은 인도 차세대 지도자로 성장할 보이스카우트와 걸스카우트 단원들에게 마인드 교육의 중요성과 필요성을 역설했다.

김재홍 IYF 교육위원장은 "6.25 한국 전쟁이후 폐허로 변해 세계에서 가장 낙후한 나라였고 더 더욱, 좁은 국토에 70% 이상이 임야로 식량난 및 지하자원 역시 부족해 발전하기에 어려움이 많았던 나라였다"고 대한민국을 소개한 뒤 "한국이 빠른 기간 내에 세계적인 경제대국‧선진국 반열에 오를 수 있었던 것은 인적 자원을 개발했기 때문"이라고 강조했다.

특히, 김 위원장은 "청소년들에게 지식 위주의 교육만을 해야 하는 것이 아니라 올바르고 도전적인 마인드를 형성시켜 줄 때 비로소 그들이 성장해 인도를 발전시키고 선진국으로 이끌 수 있을 것으로 확신 한다"며 "개인‧기업‧국가 등의 다양한 사례"를 소개해 폭발적인 반응을 불러 일으켰다.

김 위원장은 또, 인도 각 대학교 총장을 비롯 학교 이사장 및 교육부 임원진 등 300여명이 참석한 가운데 열린 포럼에서 "교육부와 학교 차원에서 마인드 교육을 실시해야 한다"는 당위성을 설명했다.

인도 前 스카우트 총재 카나타카 주 총재는 "마인드 교육이야말로 스카우트가 지향하고 있는 인재를 만드는 교육으로 앞으로 스카우트 행사에 적극적으로 함께 일할 것"이라며 즉석에서 교육부와 함께 학생들과 교사들에게 마인드교육을 시행하자고 제의하는 등 IYF와 MOU 체결을 요청해 향후 결과에 귀추가 주목되고 있다.

한편, 국제청소년연합의 이 같은 활동 소식은 인도 국영방송인 Doordarshan(두르다샨)과 인도 3대 유력지인 'Times of India' 와 'The Hindu'에 보도돼 민간외교 차원으로 대한민국의 위상을 드높이는 계기로 이어졌다는 평가가 지배적이다.

국제청소년연합은 향후 인도 교육부와 구체적인 논의를 거쳐 정식적으로 업무협약을 체결하고 마인드 교육 등에 필요한 노하우 전수 및 인적‧물적 지원에 나선다는 계획으로 알려져 있다.

인도는 전 세계에서 청소년 비율이 가장 높은 나라로 스카우트 총재 및 간부 대부분 전직 장차관 및 고위관료들로 구성돼 활발한 활동을 하고 있다.

IYF volunteers create awareness among youth on having the right mindset

The 17th national jamboree of scouts and guides at Adakanahalli in Nanjangud near here has also attracted the International Youth Federation’s (IYF) leadership and volunteers from different parts of the world to create awareness about ‘mind education and character education’.

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the National Education Leaders’ Meet at the jamboree on Monday, general secretary of IYF Education Kim Jae Hong said mind education teaches humans to have the right mindset. “For a person to be successful, she or he needs the right mindset,” he said.

Mr. Kim, who also delivered the ‘mind lecture’ sessions at the meet, said their mind education handholds the youth through their challenges and helps them become masters of their desires so that they can exercise control over any wayward tendencies. He also cited the case of a gangster from Georgia in the U.S., who was influenced by mind education and became their volunteer.

Dayana Lonappan, Director of Board of Education, IYF, Karnataka, said the meet was being held at the jamboree to discuss the need for incorporation of character education into contemporary curriculum and also to introduce the concept of mind education, which has been described as “recent science”.

“I have taken a year’s break to volunteer for IYF. I am in Bengaluru for the last five months and came here to assist IYF in organising the event,” said twenty-one-year-old Kamonchanok Kertphol, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting from a university in Bangkok.

She and biotechnology student Luksamee Jarupisuthwong from Bangkok are among the eight volunteers from Thailand, who were at the jamboree.

As part of their volunteering, Ms. Kamonchanok said they are not supposed to be carrying any money with them to control their desires.

“Our food and accommodation is taken care of by the organisation,” she said.
